Hot Summers & cool soils: Château Canon Chaigneau’s 2022 & 2003 Vintages

Greetings from Néac!

This summer in Lalande-de-Pomerol has been one of the hottest on record, with temperatures reaching 42°C. While many vineyards suffered from drought or even devastating fires further southeast, our vines were spared – and we’re deeply grateful.

The soils are parched, and the grapes are already nearing perfect ripeness, with leaves beginning to turn brown. Unlike some estates, we chose not to practise effeuillage (leaf removal), helping to shield the fruit from excessive sun. A welcome 17mm of rain on August 13–14, plus a few showers since, provided a much-needed boost.

As a result, we began harvesting our younger vines in late September – earlier than usual, though not as early as our record 2003 harvest, which started on September 3 and lasted ten days.

Why 2003 matters
Like 2022, 2003 was an extremely hot, dry summer, saved by late August rains. Thanks to our clay-limestone terroir, which retains moisture and stays cooler than sandy or gravelly soils, our vines avoided excessive hydric stress. The result? Exceptional wines with balance and elegance. Here to shop

Taste history in a glass
We’re offering a rare chance to taste both our 2022 preview and the limited 2003 vintage. Stocks are extremely limited, so don’t miss out.

"In a blind tasting, I would imagine myself to be in Pomerol. Elegant, stylish, with super-svelte tannins and exceptional balance for such a hot year… Highly recommended; indeed, shockingly good."

Update in 2025
Three years on, our 2022 is showing beautifully — the concentrated fruit has softened into a plush, velvety texture, while the freshness from our terroir keeps it vibrant. The balance we hoped for at harvest is now clearly in the glass, making this vintage one to enjoy now or cellar for years to come.
