Lalande de Pomerol – The Quiet Force of Bordeaux

Lalande de Pomerol – The Quiet Force of Bordeaux

Tucked away just north of the small but legendary Pomerol appellation, Lalande de Pomerol has long lived in its shadow. Yet, for those who know where to look, this appellation is a treasure trove of characterful, age-worthy wines — often at a fraction of the price.

A Shared Heritage

The Barbanne river separates Lalande de Pomerol from Pomerol, but the two share more than just proximity. The soils — a complex mix of gravel, clay, and limestone — are a continuation of those that made Pomerol wines famous. The dominant grape here is Merlot, supported by Cabernet Franc and a touch of Pressac (Malbec), which thrive in this climate and terroir.

AOC Since 1936

Lalande de Pomerol became an official Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) in 1936. Covering two communes — Néac and Lalande-de-Pomerol — it represents about 1,100 hectares of vines. Though less publicised than its neighbour, the appellation is home to a growing number of passionate vintners producing remarkable wines.

Where We Stand – Château Canon Chaigneau

At Château Canon Chaigneau, our 21-hectare vineyard lies at the heart of the Néac plateau, where the clay-limestone soils give depth and finesse to our Merlot-based wines. Some of our vines are over 60 years old, and we farm without irrigation, allowing nature to express itself fully.

When we acquired the estate in 2020, we were drawn to its unique location and its potential. With Thierry Garnaud — former winemaker of Château Cheval Blanc for 38 years — crafting our wines, we strive to honour this remarkable terroir with each vintage.

A Future Worth Watching

Lalande de Pomerol is increasingly recognised by critics and wine lovers for its quality, authenticity, and value. It’s a region where tradition meets evolution — and where estates like Canon Chaigneau help raise the bar year after year.
